Ever dreamed of being the popular girl in school? Sometimes I think back and wonder why high school was so about popularity. Luckily, I went to an all girls high school, where no one gave a shit if you were popular or not. You were free to be yourself and express who you were, no matter what that meant. This got me thinking back to two of my fave witch movies (besides Hocus Pocus).

It's interesting how a lot movies based on witchcraft, follow a popular girl premise i.e. fitting in. For those of you that have seen this movie, did it ever get you thinking what it would have been like to practice real witchcraft? I have to admit I did buy a witchcraft book when I was in the 5th grade and definitely recall practicing 'light as a feather, stiff as a board' with my friends. I guess being a witch there is the good, the bad and the ugly. Remember these girls?

The Craft girls are obviously more badass than Louise Miller, but this movie was definitely more new age than Teen Witch. Hit it with the witch mood board...

The HAIR! I wish I had big hair sometimes. You know what they say - the bigger the hair, the smaller the hips look.

Since I was 8 years old the voice, the beauty, the vision has never ceased to amaze me. The Beacon Street Collection was when it all started. "Squeal" threw me into the pop ska genre. I always wanted to be the front woman of a band. I mean with No Doubt, Letters to Cleo and Save Ferris, what little girl didn't dream of being a lead singer?

Being schooled in Orange County, CA and idolizing a band from the OC was so right. Blasting Tragic Kingdom and rockin out to Spiderwebs and Sunday Morning while jumping on my bed pretending the remote control was a microphone. Yea, embarrassing I know. But I definitely was not embarrassed showing up to my 4th grade class in baggy pants and a hoodie tee like it was nobody's business. I definitely do not object to bringing back the 90's grunge look, but we can save that discussion for another blog post.

And then of course came the bindi's and the colored hair. I wish I still had a photo from my 7th grade dance where I debuted the forehead bindi. I remember everyone asking me if I was forced to wear that dot on my forehead because of family tradition. At the time, I didn't know how to explain to those noobs that I was not South Asian aka Indian but that I was actually South East Asian aka Pilipino. What idiots. And then of course came high school and my "experimental" hair days. Following my freshman year I wanted to stand out and do something different, so of course I dyed my hair bright magenta. Thank you Return to Saturn and Kelly Osbourne.

I looked up to GS so much that I will have to admit, I picked up a pair of these Louis Vuitton Bindi Sunglasses when I was in Paris the summer of 2007. Although, I have never really found the right occasion to wear them.

This may be a bold statement considering my list of favorite music videos is so expansive but "Cool" off of her Love. Angel. Music. Baby. album is probably my FAVORITE video of all time. Filmed by Sophie Muller in the beautiful Lake Como, Italy you really see her true beauty and grace. She holds a look that is unlike any others, she can look as if she is from a different time. And how many people do you know can pull off platinum blonde and brown hair and look smokin in either color? This video is amazing and the fashions are undeniably genius and correspond so well to the Lake Como setting. Plus it is a beautiful story. The relationship of two lovers separated but remain cool with each other as good friends. <3

No one can ever deny how much of a classy woman Gwen Stefani really is. She is a true visionary, through her music and her style. A rockstar, a fashion designer, and a mother - one would think you couldn't have it all. But she does. I true triple threat.

Comic Con 2010

WOW! I am definitely a lagger. My apologies readers. Life has been moving at 100mph. Long story short...I got a new job and heave been super busy. Anywho, I know I said I'd post some updates from Comic Con so here are a few highlights from my trip to SD.

What I was most excited for going to Comic Con was checking out the uber cool toy booths and visiting some of my favorite artists. Tara McPherson being one of them. I was super stoked that she got to sign my Dunny from KidRobot's Femme Fatale series. She also hooked me up with a free print and some killer stickers. Her shit is dope. She also did a really cool panel with Greg Spalenka (The Voyage of the Dawn Treader) and Donato (Lord of the Rings) discussing new paradigms of creative and financial empowerment for artists. Tres interesting.

Second highlight of my weekend was meeting James Jean. Literally, a modern day genius. I picked up his book Rift which was released early exclusively at Comic Con. James does a lot with Giant Robot. Checked out the GR's Biennale earlier this year at the Japanese America Museum in Little Tokyo where he did a panel talk. Straight up G.

Finally, the biggest highlight of my weekend...

Garrett Hedlund and some of the other stars of Disney's Tron Legacy stopping by the Disney/Spin Master booth (the very first booth you saw walking in through the main entrance of the actual convention). It was amazing to see the actual actors of the movie see all the amazing toy merchandise for the movie. It was a very proud moment for me because I felt so blessed to be a part of something so amazing. Working on the Tron Legacy toy line was legit and I can't wait for the movie. More good news, our CC exclusive which was a vintage Tron action figure that had light up features won for the BEST Comic Con exclusive for 2010. I assisted on the design of the packaging so it was really really awesome to win such a prestigious award.

All and all Comic Con was great. Although, I don't see why it is still dubbed Comic Con as actual Comic books don't have as much of a heavy presence at the convention compared to new entertainment and MERCHANDISE MERCHANDISE MERCHANDISE. But I guess Comic books is where that all started from. Heroes from cb and graphic novels being brought into cinemas and selling merchandise. For next year I am definitely going to be more dedicated in waiting in line and getting in to Hall H where all the dope entertainment panels are. Sick.

Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho premiered 50 years ago yesterday (June 16, 1960). The film was nominated for four Academy Awards (including Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, Best Cinematography, and Best Art Direction/Set Direction) and the film ranked #14 on AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Movies, and ranked #11 in Entertainment Weekly’s book The 100 Greatest Movies of All Time.

As a little girl I was always intrigued by Alfred Hitchcock and his movies. Psycho is definitely one of my favorites (because Janet Leigh is a babe, lol) along with The Birds, Vertigo, and Rear Window. I still appreciate his artistry in cinematography and still believe he is one of the best Hollywood movie directors that has ever lived. He really knows how to film a movie and keep the audience on the edge of their seats.

Yesterday, a live action short film appeared on YouTube from user MortalKombatRebirth. The short film cameos some of the characters from the original video game fighting series, "Mortal Kombat"; Jax, Sonya, Baraka, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Shang Tsung, Reptile and Johnny Cage.

The short film is definitely a step up from the video game and definitely the television series from the 90's. It has a very "Saw" like feel to it, gruesome and gory effects, BLOOD! It is hard to believe that this was produced as a fan video. What's the deal Warner Bros? Stop teasing us!!! Is it true, Mortal Kombat Rebirth 2013!? Watch the 7-minute video after the jump.

So last weekend I went to Arclight Cinemas to watch Exit Through the Gift Shop, a film by renowned street artist and a modern day masked crusader, Banksy . It was freaking radical, I am definitely a fan of street art and do have my favorites (i.e. Buff Monster, Invader, Ron English and Banksy) and a lot of them make cameos in the film. What I found interesting was the story of the film, the story of Theirry Guetta aka Mr. Brainwash, modern day Andy Warhol. It is incredible how someone's genius idea can be made into art that can rake up thousands of dollars, whether the idea maker actually physically engineered the piece or not. It makes you think, is art the actual genius behind it, or the actual act of creating it?

Here are two of my favorite Banksy pieces that he did on the Gaza Strip. So genius. Banksy decorated Israel's controversial West Bank barrier with nine satirical images of life on the other side. They were showcased on the Palestinian side of the Gaza Strip wall.

I highly suggest this doc to all you art followers and non art followers. It will make you respect the street art scene even more and the crusaders behind it.

So a few months back one of my team's designers revealed something to me so effing bad-ass and now, I have found it on the Mindstyle Philippines blog.

Mindstyle and Disney are in the works of releasing a Mad Mickey vinyl this summer. Here is a first look at the work in progress prototype.

Manny Pacquiao is the only boxer in history to win seven world titles in seven different weight divisions which makes him as badass as Micky Mouse himself. So Mindstyle and some undercover designers at Disney felt that it was time for him to have his own vinyl toy collectible, he is worthy.

Pacman's limited edition range of products is going to be made available at his Team Pacquiao shops in the Philippines, so keep an eye out for the Mouse and the Pacman this summer.

Waking Sleeping Beauty

This is a must see documentary. Waking Sleeping Beauty documents the age of the Renaissance men who drove the Walt Disney Animation Studios out of it's time of turmoil and uncertainty following a trend of unsuccessful animated films. It documents the story of the animation studio from 1984 - 1994, taking you into the Golden Age of Disney animated films; which include the success' of The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and the Lion King. All under the direction of feature animation head Jeffrey Katzenberg (now CEO of Dreamworks) along with animators, storytellers and composers including young Ron Clements, John Musker, Peter Schneider, John Lasseter (now Chief Creative Officer at Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios) Tim Burton, Alan Menken, and Tim Rice. This film is actually produced by Peter Schneider and directed by Don Hahn, big time Hollywood filmmaker and producer of the first animated film ever to be nominated for an Academy Award, Beauty and the Beast.

This film will remind you how strong of a connection us 20 somethings have to Disney and it's feature animation films, it will remind you of the magic, the adventure, the amazing characters and the beautiful music that warmed our hearts. It definitely reminded me why I have such an attachment to The Walt Disney Company, there are many animated films out there; An American Tail, Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon, that are also full of adventure and memorable characters; but Disney really knows how to make magic and touch our hearts and souls and keep it memorable from the time we were 5 to 25.

A friend of mine posted this on my fbook and it intrigued me. Without a doubt the electro music scene has made it's stamp in the United States within the past couple of years. Stephen Alex Vasquez, director of The Electro Wars, was determined to document this blow up scene and it's followers to show the inner workings of the genre and what it has and is going to evolve into. He interviews various artists, mixmasters and scene goers and it is interesting to note, with the blow up of remixes on the blogosphere from blogs such as KidCityBlog and many others, whether or not we are on the verge of a surge of music overload. It is interesting to think how many budding music producers there are in the world that are capable of serious recognition with how accessible programs such as Logic and Pro Tools are and how easy it is to set up a blog. Just as home video editing programs and Youtube has made it possible for a budding film director/producer to share their vision and artistry with the rest of the world. This film touches upon such subjects as well as themes of whether or not the remix will eventually become obsolete and whether or not original tracks have to step up their games to bring themselves back to the forefront of the music circle rather than just recede into the background.

FASHION FRIDAY - Melanie Dizon

Here are some pictures of my new Melanie Dizon flats. Melanie is an America shoe and handbag designer. She was born in the Philippines and grew up in Los Angeles. She started her career producing hats that were sold in major stores including Fred Segal. She eventually made the move from LA to New York. In Spring 2001 she launched her bag collection at just 25 years old and in Spring 2006 she released her shoe collection. She currently is the visionary and designer of the Madly which is a creative design collective that revolves around the modern day nomad.

My favorite part about these flats is the detailed design on the bottom of the sole. I love little design details like this even though they won't really last after first use. (Which is why I had to take a picture of it.) The bottom reads..."Walking on water. walking on Air. Dreaming without a care in the World...I am free."

I have so much respect for Asian American designers in the fashion industry. Since early 2000 a new crew of up and coming designers have been stirring things up at Fashion Weeks across the globe joining the ranks of big name, long running designers such as Prada and Chanel. Names like Thakoon and Alexander Wang, Phillip Lim, Jason Wu, Peter Som and Monique Lhuillier, they have all contributed a brand new point of view in not only American sportswear but contemporary fashion across the international stage bringing a whole new design aesthetic to the industry as well as their very own business sense to their own lines. Melanie Dizon is definitely in line with this group of genius', her sister Melissa Dizon is also a designer, her clothing line Eairth is also worth checking out.

Nolan on rebooting Superman and the final installment of Batman

Touché DC Comics, Christopher Nolan is badass.

The man has finally spoken about his involvement with the reboot of the new Superman film. He is planning on moving the franchise in a whole new direction and giving the hero a completely new take compared to Richard Donner's vision of the Superman character that was adapted by Bryan Singer's 2006 Superman film. Nolan told the L.A. Times that his Superman will take a different approach from the script that David Goyer is currently writing. When Goyer presented the idea, Nolan said, "I immediately got it, loved it and thought: That is a way of approaching the story I’ve never seen before that makes it incredibly exciting." Christopher Nolan also dismissed rumors that he would be directing the Superman film and said he'll be onboard in much the same way as Peter Jackson served as producer on District 9.

NOW, let's talk Batman. Nolan revealed in his LA Times interview that his brother, Jonathan Nolan, is hard at work writing the script for the final installment of the Batman franchise but he has not confirmed who will be directing it. "My brother is writing a script for me and we’ll wait to see how it turns out... He’s struggling to put it together into the epic story that you want it to be."

What else is interesting that he mentions is that while The Dark Knight established The Joker as a major threat to Gotham, the third Batman film will resolve many things and serve as a conclusion to the franchise. "Unlike the comics, these things don't go on forever in film and viewing it as a story with an end is useful." Nolan admitted. "Viewing it as an ending, that sets you very much on the right track about the appropriate conclusion and the essence of what tale we're telling."

Ya, ya we get it Chris...BUT who will be the next villain!?!? Well there was not much detail on the specifics but he promises, "it won't be Dr. Freeze."

Norton Simon Museum

The collection at The Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena was very versatile, they had everything from 17th-19th century art and modern and contemporary paintings and sculptures exuding the genius of post-impressionism and realism. They house everyone from Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir, Picasso, Matisse, Diego Rivera and many more. My favorite pieces were the Californian art from the 1950's through the 70's, which included artwork from Aristide Maillol, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Isamu Noguchi. And the gift shop had the best selection of books on Californian/Los Angeles architecture, Illustration, Art History, and Art's and Crafts. I had my eye on this book...

Illustration Play by Victionary Books. It was 39.95 but I checked on Amazon and it's 26.37!!! I am thinking of purchasing it. It's great for creative stimulation and I think it can really help inspire me with rad ideas at work for my product development brainstorms. It has a lot of mixed media designs by various artists. Love love love! The Norton Simon also had a beautiful garden, great for a photo op ;-)

Jean Paul Gaultier's line for target released this past Sunday and of course all the good stuff was sold out in literally minutes. I had my eye on that trench coat (that I'm sure everyone else had their eye on since it was the first thing that sold out) but I missed my chance since I signed on to the site at 1 a.m. After searching the stores at literally 8 a.m. on Sunday morning and having no luck (I don't know why the stores I went to were not carrying the trench) I gave up on my search and came to terms with the fact that I really did not want it/need it. Looking at it now being sold on ebay for twice the retail price I find it a bit ridiculous. I was pretty disappointed in JPG entire Target line, it was not very compelling at all and the material of the trench does not seem like it's that great. Sigh. At least I have Zac Posen for Target to look forward to now! Hehehe! Some of my favorites...
